Concerning Hobbits…and the ignorant”

Everyday I find myself coming across a bevy of interesting people, or perhaps I should reword this and simply say people that interest and/or fascinate me. This doesn’t always quite constitute a positive though. It amazes me when I come across shortsighted mindsets or those who turn a blind eye to the past and their predecessors.

Seeing as how that’s an awfully broad statement with the ability to cover a variety of topics, I can narrow it down to my most recent run in with one of society’s “sharpest.”

While standing in line at the supermarket, I bent over to set down my basket, prompting the young man behind me to inquire about the tattoo on my back. He started off by guessing it was a type of sword, a butterfly or a Celtic design until I stopped him by saying it was from Lord of the Rings. He then asked if I got it after seeing those “sick ass movies,” (and at this point I’m wondering why wont the line I’m in move faster….). In an attempt to explain what prompted my ink, he cuts me off and in absolute sincerity asks, “What do you mean they’re books? Weren’t they based off those cartoon movies?” I simply stared at him, slightly bewildered…even if he never read or heard of the novels, doesn’t it state most of the time that the films are based off J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings? Yeah I’m more then certain it does.

He continued babbling on, stating how all of the best movies, especially his favorites, come from original scripts, not based off “stupid books,” and then proceeded to name his favorites; Fight Club, No Country for Old Men, Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas, Congo, Bourne Identity and so on. At this point, in order to stifle myself from wanting to backhand him, I picked up my basket and took myself and my tattoo to another line… on the other side of the store.

I wonder if this can be attributed to a lack in education or an inability to use common sense and read the disclaimers.

Eek! I’m guessing the last thing he read that would have even remotely resembled a book must have been “The Weekly World News” :-)

What an ignorant jackass, and he had bad taste in movies to, I mean Lord of the Rings is awesome.

It’s unfortunate that “common sense” isn’t all that common. If it were “common”, everyone would have it, but it’s painfully evident that not everybody does. So then, shouldn’t we call it “uncommon” sense? Too often I am perplexed by the idiocy of the general public at large, and this only reinforces my choice of pessimism over kinder, gentler “benefit-of-the-doubt” types of responses. What we need to determine, is if the individual in question is worth the time to educate. After all, ignorance is curable, stupidity, (staunch or otherwise), is not.

Every time you hit the apostrophe key, it actually prints out a wierd letter “a” (accent circumflex), and what appears to be the Greek letter epsilon in a cookey font. You might want to remap the IA (information architecture) trademark. Some kink.com sites do that also. I just thought that you should know.

BTW, do you have a fan mail address?

Fight club is based off of a book by the same name. That guy was an idiot.

Just gotta say. Your work is good. I’m no porn expert but I’m enjoying it. But this blog? Seriously. It’s all trivia. I didn’t know about the origins of that or most other movies but that doesn’t make me an idiot. He was probably just trying to impress you with the way he was talking. Take it as a compliment. He’s probably a nice guy.

Umm…I don’t know about you, but some of those “original scripts” he rattled off came from books. Did he know that Fight Club was based off the book written by Chuck Palahniuk? And I think Fear and Loathing was based off either a book or experiences of Hunter S. Thompson. I personally think some of the best movies come from books, like The Godfather, in which the original book was written by Mario Puzo, and it gets translated on screen, but I don’t want to bore you. Well, I hope you didn’t have a bad experience from it, and the best of luck!

Precisely! I would love to sit and discuss the works of Mario Puzo but I wouldnt want to bore YOU. lol but perhaps we can just bore each other ;)

Damn it, now I have to go re-read the Godfather and other Puzo works before seeing you again. If I’m lucky and that’s in a few days, I’m fucked, because I can’t read that fast. If I’m unlucky and I have to wait a month or two, I’m still fucked, because I still can’t read that fast! lol Seriously, as much as I love reading, and Puzo in particular, I’m typically reading five to ten comic books a week plus three novels or anthologies at a time. Working on Stephen King’s “Everything’s Eventual” right now, plus finishing up Nobilis and keeping my In Nomine game on track. I won’t say that the best movies come from books, because often enough the adaptations to screen *suck,* but having seen the re-release of “The Outsiders” recently, I have to pick up S.E. Hinton’s little novel as well. It’s amazing I have any time for porn…! ;) xoxo, Amber, and happy early birthday.
